Lawler House Quietly Opens History Center

March 18, 2010

SUISUN CITY — The small Solano History Exploration Center quietly opened its doors this afternoon in two rooms in the 150-year-old Lawler House on Main Street.

“I didn't think we'd ever get this,” said a pleased longtime museum supporter and docent, David Marianno.

The center has pictures of the Lawler House's history as well as of early Suisun City and Fairfield. Fairfield founder Capt. Robert Waterman's chair is on display.

A second room contains sculptures, bas-reliefs and drawings created by artist William Gordon Huff, who created the iconic Chief Solano statue that now stands in downtown Fairfield.

“I am impressed,” said Suisun City Councilman Mike Hudson, who was one of the first visitors Thursday. “We need this.”

Exhibits are still being built. The center will have its formal grand opening April 22. It is presently open from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday to Saturday as docents are present. The Lawler House is located at 718 Main Street.
